Everton’s unbeaten run halted by humbling defeat to Chelsea
Everton 0 – 2 Chelsea
The Toffees were left to count the cost of dropped points in earlier games and some perplexing selection decisions by the manager as they came up depressingly short against the Londoners
Home games against Chelsea have been a source of pride, exhilaration and points for Everton in recent seasons but there would be no repeat today of the heroics that saw the Blues beat the West Londoners convincingly at Bramley-Moore Dock in March or the adrenaline-fuelled triumph that helped Frank Lampard’s side avoid relegation in 2022.
On that latter occasion, Jordan Pickford produced one of the most incredible saves of his career as part of an outstanding display but England’s No 1 had an afternoon to forget on this occasion, one where Everton were found depressingly wanting once the initial fire in their bellies had been quelled.
This was a humbling contest in many ways that illuminated so many of the shortcomings not only of the personnel at David Moyes disposal but also the manager’s own perplexing team selection and substitution policies and the paucity of the Toffees’ build-up play.
It was in stark and painful contrast to Chelsea who were comfortable on the ball and, at times, slick and decisive going forward with their galaxy of attacking stars. It would take another poor moment from Pickford going down to his left for their first goal and the failure by any Everton defender to react quickly to the loose ball for their second to help them seal the points but, on balance, an away win felt inevitable all the way through an injury-disrupted second half in which the hosts largely failed to show up.
With Chelsea under Xabi Alonso renowned for their goalscoring prowess, it was suitably on-brand of Moyes to eschew three of his natural wingers and deploy Merlin Röhl wide on the right flank in front of Ainsley Maitland-Niles who kept his place at right-back despite his errors at Hull City last Sunday.
Jack Grealish started on the other flank once more while Vitalii Mykolenko made a welcome return at left-back and for much of the first half, Everton gave as good as they got, compensating for their comparative lack of overall quality with plenty of endeavour and aggression.
It would be 15 minutes before either side managed to work either goalkeeper when Jordan Pickford made a routine stop to gather Cole Palmer’s 25-yard effort before Pedro Neto got around the back for the first time but Jordan Henderson’s shot was blocked behind on its way to goal.
Everton had wasted two set-piece opportunities by this point but persistence from Röhl in attack ended with him firing straight at Emiliano Martinez in the 26th minute.
But it was Thierno Barry who would have the hosts’ best chance of the game a minute later when a poor James Garner corner ended at the feet of Grealish but when he swung in an inviting cross, Barry could only head into Martinez’s arms from a central position.
Moyes’s men were enjoying what would be their best spell of the afternoon and Martinez had to be alert to palm Grealish’s bouncing volley over his crossbar. Then, a terrific turn inside Josh Acheampong by Mykolenko saw him slide it square for Barry with his back to goal but while the Frenchman was able to muscle his way to getting a shot off, it lacked the power to beat the keeper.
At the other end, Moises Caicedo thundered a volley off the crossbar after being picked out by Henderson’s corner kick, Neto forced Pickford to tip a stinging long-rage strike over while Harrison Armstrong had to clear Maxence Lacroix’s glancing header off his line from the resulting corner in first-half stoppage time.
Chelsea have made a habit this season of getting off to fast goalscoring starts to matches but, on this occasion, it was their quickness off the mark at the start of the second half that broke the match open in their favour and broke Everton’s resistance.
This time it was Jorrel Hato who was allowed to power untracked by Röhl around the back ahead of Maitland-Niles on the end of Morgan Rogers' backheel down the line. Hato's deflected cut-back arrived at the feet of Neto who swept it towards the bottom corner where Pickford waved a half-hearted glove at the ball but mostly missed it and it was 1-0 before a minute had elapsed following the restart. It was the third time Everton have conceded within three minutes of the start of the second half this season.
Tyrique George was readied to come on almost immediately but it would be more than eight minutes before he took the field in place of Maitland-Niles after a lengthy debrief in the dugout.
However, neither the winger’s introduction nor his switch to the left that sent Grealish to the right had any real impact and it was the visitors who established a stranglehold on the game.
Garner ushered Neto to the byline in the 56th minute but Röhl made a vital stop to block Rogers' shot from the cut-back before Palmer flashed an ambitious snapshot over from distance.
Barry had a half-chance at one end when Mykolenko swung in a cross from the left but he couldn’t fight his way through to get enough purchase with his header while Neto bent an effort a yard wide at the other.
The match was then held up for more than 10 minutes following Branthwaite and Martinez’s collision in the box that left both players prone on the turf. The big Everton defender was able to his feet after a couple of minutes and was able to continue but the Chelsea goalkeeper eventually had to be carried off the field and taken to hospital.
When play resumed there were still 25 minutes to go but the home side never looked likely to claw their way back to parity. Instead, it was Moyes’s decision to throw on a visibly unfit Christian Nørgaard instead of Hayden Hackney that led to the Londoners sealing the win at the end of the regulation 90.
The lead-footed Dane was painfully slow to react to a poor lay-off by George in midfield that left Chelsea with a three-on-two break where Joao Pedro was denied by Pickford’s excellent blocking save.
But when Nørgaard was booked for holding Palmer outside the box and Henderson’s free-kick was charged down by the wall, no one in Blue reacted quickly enough and Neto guided a simple finish to Pickford’s right and in.
Good work by Dewsbury-Hall four minutes later almost paid dividends as substitute Brennan Johnson came flying in to meet his shot-cum-cross but the ball missed the latter’s out-stretched boot by inches and skidded behind for a goal kick.
Had that gone in it might have sparked a grandstand finish but it was not to be on a hugely disappointing afternoon that saw Everton’s unbeaten run come to an unceremonious end. In the process they became the first team not to score against Alonso’s porous defence and it makes those failures to win at Bournemouth, Tottenham and, in particular, Hull, feel all the most costly.

Moyes doesn't trust young players. Hackney, George et al need to put a bit of grey in their hair today. For me KDH and Garner were off the boil today.
Like I posted elsewhere we had a good 20/25 mins in 1st half, the rest was crap!

Can anyone explain delaying further substitutions until the 85th minute? Definitely not.
Once Chelsea scored then I dont think we ever had any kind of a real foothold in the midfield area, which meant that I thought the decision to bring on a midfielder, who has played zero minutes this season, both ridiculous and also a real two fingered salute, to both Hackney and Alkaraz.

Bad day at the office all round.
Poor team selection. Poor substitutions and a limp effort second half from a number of players.
Maybe the decision to announce the sale of the club has affected the players but they can do a lot better than 25 minutes today.
My son described Moyes as an 80/20 manager. 80% of what he does is good but the other 20% will prevent him and his players to never be among the elite.

Numbing and some glaring errors and poor play. Kicking to Barry looking into the sun, and trying to Pickers trying to make long range passes and going out of play or to a Cgelsea player..
Reality hits and Arsenal next.
A bad day and Norgaard looks miles off fitness, what was the point of bringing him on..Johnson?
Barry, had little service but needs some heading practice.
Very dissappointing to lose in this manner.
The Ref. should have sent the ex Villalad off and booking Harrison for a fair tackle, was a farce but that roused Everton for their best spell of the game.
4 soft goals given away in x2 games.
Looking very tough days ahead but hopefully Everton can hold their nerve in a run of hard matches coming up.

As I mentioned on a previous thread, today was always likely to see a defeat for us.
Despite a first half where I think we were marginally the better team, as soon as they scored our heads dropped and the second half was pretty shocking.
Barry cannot trap a ball, doesnt put any centre half under pressure and misses a hell of a lot more than he should.
This was a game that showed we will lose more than we win and will finish around 14th.
A striker in January is an absolute must as Barry is costing us vital points.
The referee was another example of someone pandering to one of the ‘bigger teams.
They surrounded the referee from the first minute and continued throughout the game.
Horrible team, horrible club, horrible fans.

On the last match thread, I said that although, I am grateful for our position In the table, I couldnt help feeling that we were hanging by a thread And a reality check was right around the corner.
Well I wasnexpecting it so soon !
Without wanting to bang a drum, as I never wish any failings for my team, nor bring it bad luck, to the extent, that having been a betting man, I have never once in my lifetime bet money on my team, for, or against them winning… except when I was Young lad and wagered the odd Mars Bar with friends.
I also stated that Dibling made a complete fake of Moyes for not bringing him on earlier in the game.
Well, today it was Tyrique George who made a complete Ass of Moyes.
The team was set out from the offset, not to attack.
Why isnt OBrien starting before Maitland Niles.
FFS, we needed a competent full back and we get a 4 million version, with serious mileage on the clock, that is error prone and has to be substituted.
Looking at the game, I thought we did alright, in a large portion of the first half.
But, after the break, it looked like Chelsea were playing with an inflated Ball and we were playing with a deflated one, such was the heavy passes and the need to take two, or more touches to control it.
At one stage it looked like none of our players wanted the Ball.. as it was deflated !
What was that decision to introduce Norgaard, instead of Hackney and, or, Dibling, when we need an urgent Goal?
Why did he keep Barry on, whos turning into Robinson Cruseo?
This doesnt augur well for our upcoming games.
17/10/2026 19:25:49
after match presser Moyes says Norgaard needs minutes in his legs.
Yeah we all saw he wasnt fit enough to compete.
Hackney shoulda been on.
Tells me Norgaard a Moyes pick and Hackney is a committee pick.
Dibling finally shows us what hes about, never to be seen again Mosey ?
Barry, didnt do anywhere near enough today, miles of it.
Still need a right back.
Didht want Moyes back, no bravery about him and hes sent a timid team out at home.
The Yanks ? Fk yerselves right off we havent got a competitive manager or squad for that matter.
17/10/2026 19:38:50
I'm not surprised we lost but we are pretty ordinary aren't we.
There's no spark from midfield, very little urgency to get the ball forward. If Garners an International then there's a chance for me, I can't say I'm overly impressed with Armstrong either.
I've usually been on Moyes side but he needs to give Hackney and Dibling much more game time and I have to admit some of his decisions now take some understanding.
17/10/2026 19:49:27
2 wins in the last 14 league games tells us all we need to know about Moyes and his shockingly negative tactics, team selection and in-game management, dinosaur doesnt begin to describe him.
Unfortunately we are stuck with him, TFG are not interested, I just hope any future owners have marked his card.
17/10/2026 19:55:27
If Norgard needs minutes in his legs why didnt he get 90 last night in the U21s ? Ridiculous to put him on 0-1 down chasing a game, he was awful, as was the decision to bring him on, 3-0 up fair enough,
Moyes is an idiot, he really is.
17/10/2026 20:51:04
I'm a Moyes fan, but can't defend him today!
17/10/2026 21:49:23
I didnt think we would win today.
Neither did our manager.
However, its his job, for which he is highly paid, to make the players believe otherwise.
17/10/2026 21:52:47
Wasn't able to see the game today until later I am glad Moyes has got away with the same formula up to now. In the Premier League it was only a matter of time before a Premier League team was set up to expose it and Moyes just stuck to the formula as he always does.To counter it Everton needed to play on the front foot and challenge them and the defence needed to move up in support, leaving no gaps.
17/10/2026 22:13:34
After last weeks mistakes I was surprised AMN actually started today, Moyes obviously doesnt trust him because as soon as he was exposed for Chelseas first today he dragged him off, in what must be Moyess earliest tactical substitution in his whole 23 year career as a manager, 51 minutes and 3 goals on the bounce now all down to a footballer who cannot concentrate on what is going on around him,Im sorry but AMN should be way down the pecking order at RB, and even further behind the pack if he thinks hes a midfielder.
17/10/2026 22:51:11
Yes a very disappointing performance, apart from captain Tarkowski who I thought was terrific and had his best game for a very long time. As others have said not sure just what Moyes had planned with his substitutes as the game cried out for Hackney to be brought on rather than Norgaard who looked well off the pace. Finally poor Barry had a poor game, but just who could play as a lone striker in this team ?
17/10/2026 23:02:13
David, Id give Alcaraz a go.
17/10/2026 23:04:05
David, I agree Tarkowski had a great game today and is clearly playing much better with Branthwaite alongside him.
Just about any striker would struggle in our team having to play the lone role but Barry cant even get the basics right.
I would like to see Richarlison back in January if that is possible.
As for Maitland-Niles, he was awful so I would expect to see Rohl there for a while at least.
Weve got options out wide and in midfield but Moyes will continue to pick the same players regardless until by the turn of the year they are out on their feet and he can blame the small squad numbers

At least we can now move on from the pretence that Everton have played well this season. We have not seen a good 90 minute performance in any game.
It ridiculous that Hackney, George and Dibling start every match on the bench, while Grealish, Dewsbury-Hall, Garner and Johnston struggle. Can anyone explain delaying further substitutions until the 85th minute, only to bring on Norgaard and Johnston?
Picking the same core set of older players regardless of performances, cautious gameplans, young players not getting minutes, late substitutions. Moyes never seems to learn.
The only factor saving the manager from criticism this season has been the weakness of his squad. We started the summer needing two full-backs and a striker and are in the same position now. Maitland-Niles is a midfielder and he does not look comfortable at right back.
I really hope the Friedkins sell the club before the end of the year, as we need owners who will invest in the playing squad in January.
